Creative Arts

How does this artifact show your achievement of ICC themes/perspectives learning outcomes?

1.     Recognize and explain the forms, techniques, and processes used in at least one area of creative arts;

 We only had one written assignment in Music and Society before Covid-19 hit. He requested us to write about a concert that we attended. Therefore, the assignment that he gave us taught everyone how to appreciate different types of music from non-western cultures, as well as, how to understand that music especially since it may not be sound that westerners are accustomed to hearing.

Throughout the term, he showed us different video clips of people playing non-western instruments, in order to learn about different cultures and how each instrument is played using different methods of keeping time. Such styles include timbre, melodies, and harmony, however, each country varies in terms of keeping time and measurements of beats. Some continents and people that were covered in this unit included Africa, India, Japan, Native Americans in the United States, as well as the music of Jewish people.

2. Analyze, in yourself and others, how performances or creative works stimulate emotions, provoke thoughts, or guide actions and beliefs; and

Performances stimulate emotions and provoke thoughts in many ways. The first stimulant of emotions being that performances allow people to digest and interpret the melodies and rhythm of songs in different ways. Additionally, performances can help individuals understand the feelings that the composer wanted the audience to feel. Therefore, the process of music can allow for more relaxation and even jubilance. It can also allow a person who is religious to feel the presence of God.

3. Articulate the role of the creative arts in the construction of historical and/or contemporary cultures

The role of music in the construction of the historical and contemporary cultures is helping us to understand the creativity of individuals of many centuries ago and how westerners reacted with confusion when they first heard it.  Not only does it teach us the historical aspect, but it can also help to unite individuals through different types of expressionism, such as art, music, drawing, and sculpture.

How does what you learned in this course relate to your theme and other learning experiences?

In taking this course, it has allowed me to become more open-minded with non-western music and be more accepting of different cultures. This course’s outcome in learning can relate to other courses in my theme because it shows that to truly understand other types of music, you have to be exposed to the music, as well as, have a basic understanding of what you are learning in order to comprehend the material that is being taught. Additionally, this can relate to other learning experiences that I have had at Ithaca College because, in order to understand the subject to the best of one’s ability, one must attend different performances, workshops, or experiences in order to become confident enough in your knowledge of the subject.
